Google Ads Running But No Calls? 7 Reasons Local Campaigns Fail

· 7 min read · Troubleshooting

Short answer

Google Ads campaigns usually get clicks without calls because of untracked conversions, targeting that reaches the wrong area, broad keywords attracting non-customers, or a landing page that does not make calling easy.

Clicks without calls is one of the most frustrating positions to be in. The account looks busy, the budget is being spent, and nothing is happening at your end. Almost always, the cause is one of the following.

1. The calls are happening and nobody is counting them

This is the most common explanation by a wide margin. If call tracking was never set up, calls generated by your ads look identical to every other call you receive. The campaign may be working perfectly well and you would have no way to know.

Before changing anything else, confirm that calls and form submissions are being recorded as conversions. Changing a campaign you cannot measure is guesswork with a budget attached.

2. Your ads are showing outside your service area

Location targeting is easy to get subtly wrong. A radius drawn around a city centre often includes towns you do not serve. Worse, the default setting in Google Ads can show your ads to people merely showing interest in your area, not just people physically in it.

The result is clicks from people who were never going to become customers, charged at full price.

3. Broad keywords are attracting the wrong searches

Keywords that seem obviously relevant often are not. Someone searching for your service is not necessarily someone who wants to buy it. The same words are used by:

  • People looking for a job in your industry
  • Students and researchers
  • DIYers looking for instructions rather than a professional
  • Competitors checking what you are running
  • People looking for free or heavily discounted options

Every one of those clicks costs the same as a click from a genuine customer. Without a list of blocked terms in place from day one, they can consume a meaningful share of a small local budget.

4. Your ad promises something the page does not deliver

If the ad mentions emergency call-outs and the landing page is a general homepage, the visitor has to hunt for what they came for. Most will not. The message in the ad and the message on the page need to match closely.

5. Calling is harder than it should be

On a phone, the number should be visible without scrolling and tappable. Not an image, not text in a footer, not hidden behind a contact page. Small friction at this point costs a disproportionate number of enquiries.

6. You are advertising when nobody can answer

For service businesses that rely on phone calls, running ads outside working hours often means paying for calls that go unanswered. An unanswered call from a paid click is worse than no click at all — the caller has already moved to the next result.

7. Expectations are set against the wrong timescale

A new campaign needs time and consistent spend before performance stabilises. Judging it after a few days, or changing settings every couple of days, prevents it from ever settling. Frequent changes reset the learning process rather than accelerating it.

Where to start

Work through these in order. Tracking first, because without it every other diagnosis is a guess. Then location and keywords, because those are where local budgets leak fastest. Only then look at the ad and the landing page.
